JOYFEST - NIT SURAT

INTRODUCTION

The second version of JOYFEST was celebrated at SVNIT Surat on 26th September 2010. Keeping in view the basic idea of JOYFEST i.e. to pleasure the needy, iIndia with over 150 underprivileged of our society celebrated JOYFEST. This included 25 physically challenged girls form "Viklang School" , 80 orphans from "Yatin Khana, Surat" and "Katargaun", 35 children with weak financial background and 20 old age home inmates.

JOYFEST - 26th September, 2010

The event started at 10.00 in the morning at staff club of NIT Surat where in a fair was arranged which had a puppet show, a magic show, a jumping jack and few mascots moving around. The fair continued till 12 and was followed by lunch. The lunch continued till one and was followed by a couple of movie screening of "chitti chitti bang bang" and "Dashavatar". Mean while ANTAKSHRI was played with the old age home inmates and they were given chance to share few moments of their life. After this snacks were distributed and a gaming session was conducted. Many games like snakes and ladder, throw ball, origami, video game were played. At the end the children were gifted with copies and sketch pen box and the elderly people were honored with sari, shawl and a coconut.

Visit from District Development Officer

The event saw a visit from Mr J.B. Vora, District Development Officer. The DDO interacted with elderly people and inquired the difficulties they face in their daily life. He also spent quality time with the children and briefed them the heights they can achieve. The event also saw huge support from the faculties and the student of the college. Over 100 volunteers participated for the noble cause.

Other Activities - Bicycle Donation

During JOYFEST we are also conducting cloth donation and bicycle donation. The institute is donating over 20 bicycles which would be distributed among students in nearby villages of Surat who experience difficulty while commuting.

The cloth donation saw active support from a Delhi based NGO GOONJ. The institute members as well as the CITIZENS OF SURAT HAVE DONATED COLTHS in huge number which would be transported to Mumbai centre of the GOONJ.

The fest in total was done on a budget of 80,000 INR for which various fund raising activities like JOYFEST MUG Selling and donation drive were conducted. The event saw support from,

Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) as an Institute of National Importance and being a one of the premier and oldest institutions in the state, it enjoys the presence of the most experienced of faculties, whose intentions not only lie in covering the academic grounds, but also establishing a web of activities that encourages learning by practical methods. This positive motivation is what that ensures active participation of the pool of innovative minds in National as well as International activities.

About iIndia
Started by few students of 2007-08 batch with a vision of equipping college with a student chapter which works for social, environmental as well as economical causes, iIndia was established. Without receiving any financial assistance in its first year iIndia imperforated the gigantic task of completing its founding year with a bunch of successful events.

Follow Up

The end of the Joy of Giving week isn't the end of this initiative. A dedicated students group in this college spends time to teach children of masons working in the premises. Regular visit to old age homes on week end to share their experiences is planned. Also, iIndia plans a paper collection drive throughout the campus and the money gained from selling which would be channelized for appropriate donations to the needy.
